September 2019

We started off September with a Fashion Show:
With willing support from our models, we held a Ty Hafan Fashion Show.  Outfits were worn by our ladies from stock held in Ty Hafan Charity Shop in High Street, Barry. Our compere was Linda and the event went pretty smoothly considering we had not rehearsed before.  We had a very good audience and clothes and accessories were being sold steadily.

Following the  fashion show we changed tempo and twelve ladies went along to the Memorial Hall to enjoy an evening of music from the tribute band, the Mersey Beatles. The evening started with tracks from the album Abbey Road and moved backwards in time to the early days and the likes of Love me Do and Twist and Shout, which saw the hall come alive with dancers young and slightly older! A great night and thanks to Sue for organising it.

On Saturday 14th we entertained 35 ladies and 3 gentlemen guests, from two WI’s in the Wentloog group, Gwent Federation, to afternoon tea at our hall in Highlight Park. We were also pleased to be joined by Jane and Carol from our own Glamorgan Federation and 20 Barry WI ladies.  Our visitors had enjoyed a visit to Dyffryn House and Gardens before joining us at the hall and we were pleased to welcome everyone. A scrumptious spread was enjoyed by all and a big thank you to all the ladies who contributed  and helped with the organising. A quick thank you also to Jeanette, for her poem which helped set the “fun” tone for the afternoon.

Tuesday 17th September, our social afternoon meeting and the theme was Poppy Craft. Twenty eight ladies got together and made felt poppies for themselves or friends and purchased them by way of a donation to be passed onto the local British Legion. Thanks to Pat and June for their help and guidance, a very pleasant afternoon. Pieces of red, green and black felt quickly resulted in beautiful poppies decorated as to the user’s preference.  Cups of tea and coffee and cakes and biscuits made the afternoon a very social occasion.

Thursday, 19th and 28 ladies and 1 gentleman set off to Cardiff to see the matinee performance of Blood Brothers at the New Theatre. A number of the ladies made good use of the T9 bus from Highlight Park and lunched in Cardiff before the show. It was a fantastic show and our thanks to Sue for organising it.
Meet for lunch will be at the Sully Constitutional Club on Friday 27th , 12.30.
October 1st will be a special occasion for us. It is the 30th anniversary of the Barry WI Group and one of the original members will be celebrating with us all at the Copthorne Hotel for a special lunch.
Monthly meetings will be on the first Tuesday of the month (except Oct 1st) at 2 pm and Social meetings on Third Tuesday of each month at 2 pm. This is a new arrangement for the winter months.  Weekly knit and natter as usual on Thursdays at 2 pm – 4 pm. DB
