Resolution Selected for 2024

Between November and February, every WI member had the chance to have their say on the shortlisted resolutions and the first resolution on Dental Health Matters received the most selections both nationally and in Glamorgan.   NFWI have therefore decided that this is the resolution which will be taken to the Annual Meeting on 5th June 2024 at the Royal Albert Hall. The resolution reads:

Dental Health Matters
There is a chronic shortage of NHS Dentists and people are suffering health issues as a result. The NFWI calls on the Government to increase investment in the training and retention of dentists and to review the current inadequate NHS contracts in order to ensure everyone can access an NHS dentist wherever they live.

Members now have the opportunity to learn more about the issues, and to discuss the resolution in their WIs before deciding how their Link delegate should vote at the Annual Meeting.
All WIs get one vote– for or against the resolution.
WIs may choose to give their link delegate discretion to decide how to vote after hearing the speakers and the debate at the Annual Meeting.

Resolution Selected for 2023

Between November and February, every WI member had the chance to have their say on the shortlist and the resolution they would like to see go forward to the Annual Meeting on 25 May.

Resolution No. 4   Clean rivers for people and wildlife received the most selections both in West Sussex and nationally.  Members then discussed this in their WIs and their Link Delegates took their votes to the NFWI Annual Meeting.

The resolution was passed with a majority of 84%  and has now become a mandate.

The wording of the resolution is as follows:

Water quality in our rivers is shameful. Legally, designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities and Government to make, support and promote applications for official designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be as instrumental to the clean up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches.

Members are now encouraged to take part in this campaign and more information can be found on My WI.

NFWI Resolutions shortlist 2022/23

1. Save our water – every drop matters

As global temperatures rise, there is a risk drought will become more frequent in the UK. This will place increasing strains on the UK’s water supply and endanger our natural world. The NFWI calls on government and water companies to work together to develop robust plans that would ensure the UK’s long-term water security, including addressing water leakage from pipes. The NFWI calls on WI members to take immediate personal actions to value and conserve water.

2. Women to women – turning over a new leaf in the lives of women tea workers

While in the UK we enjoy our daily cuppa, the mostly women tea workers who produce our tea struggle to access living wages, decent housing, sanitation or education for their children due to the low prices paid to producers for tea. The NFWI calls on UK tea companies and retailers to take action to fix the broken tea buying system to enable plantation owners to give women tea pluckers a fair deal so they can live the healthy and prosperous family life they deserve.

3. Online gambling harm: time for action

Online gambling has substantially increased, resulting in a growing number of people being exposed to the risks of gambling-related harms. Current legislation is inadequate in addressing the harms caused by problem gambling and in providing protections to those affected. This resolution calls on decisionmakers to introduce updated legislation and regulation to address these issues, and for increased support to be made available to those affected by problem gambling, particularly women and children.

4. Clean rivers for people and wildlife

Resolution Selected for 2022

From November 2021 to February 2022 members had the opportunity to consider which of the five shortlisted resolutions they most favoured.  Women and Girls with ASD and ADHD Under-Identified, Under-Diagnosed and Under-Supported received the most selections throughout the country.
The resolution was then passed at the NFWI Annual Meeting and has become a mandate.

The wording of the resolution is:

Women and Girls with ASD & ADHD - under-identified, under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, under-supported

Women and girls presenting with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are going undiagnosed. The NFWI calls on the government and funding bodies to fund research into the female presentation of ASD and ADHD, and for action to be taken to improve the diagnosis process for women and girls, to ensure that they are equipped to better manage these conditions and do not suffer in silence.  The NFWI further calls on WI members to raise awareness within their WIs of the issues facing women and girls with ASD and ADHD.

The shortlisted resolutions are:

  2. Appropriate Sentencing of Non-Violent Women Offenders
  3. Equality in Law for the Menopause
  4. Women and Girls with ASD and ADHD Under-Identified, Under-Diagnosed and Under-Supported

Resolution Selected for 2021

Between November 2020 and January 2021, every WI member had the chance to have their say on the shortlist and the resolution they would like to see go forward to the Annual Meeting on 8th June.  The resolution on Ovarian Cancer received by far the most selections  and this has therefore been chosen for this year.

1. A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer

Every two hours in the UK someone dies of ovarian cancer. Making sure GPs and the public know what to look for will not only ensure the early detection and treatment of this disease, but transform lives today and for generations to come. NFWI calls on WI members everywhere to help increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer.

This resolution was passed with a majority of 99.48%.  This means the resolution is now an NFWI mandate and will form the basis of a national WI campaign which all members are invited to work on.

What happens next?
The NFWI Public Affairs Department will be producing a full campaign action pack with ideas and resources that you can use to take the campaign forward. This will be available on the NFWI website and My WI when it is ready.
