May 2019
Barry WI, Highlight Park, News for May 2019
Our May meeting saw 60 members attend to hear our President Barbara thank everyone for their work over the last year. Fire drill was announced by Anne and then we sang Jerusalem. The minutes of the last meeting were read by June and followed by birthday announcements. Pam our secretary read out all the forthcoming events and invitations. We have a whiteboard outlining each event so the members can put their names down in advance. New members and potential new members were welcomed. Programmes were handed out as well as the latest Glamorgan Federation News. With business finished and the courier arriving with the fish and chips supper, bread and butter and a good cup of tea all made for a tasty meal enjoyed by the ladies. The raffle was drawn and it was time for a chat before leaving the hall.
Visit to see Calendar Girls at Millennium Centre Cardiff
On Thursday 2nd of May a large group of Barry WI ladies made their way the Millenium Centre in Cardiff Bay to see the highly anticipated performance of Calendar Girls.
A number of ladies set off early, talking full advantage of the local transport direct to the Bay, in order to enjoy a pleasant lunch or undertake a little retail therapy prior to the performance, all of which added to the day as a whole. Sue our organiser had arranged for us all to be in the same seating area and we settled in for the show.
What a show, it was funny, sad, quirky and totally upllifting. Looking along the row every emotion was on display, laughter, sadness even tears but most of all enjoyment! According to one of the staff members, the large audience that day was two thirds WI ladies and judging by the laughter and applause enjoyed by everyone.
Sue has been busy selecting new theatre highlights and further events will be The Blues Brothers, The Carpenters and Nine to Five and we are also booking for the King and I at the Millennium next January.
The Lunch Club has been a huge success and is on-going, the last Friday of every month.
Trip to the Mumbles, Norton House Hotel.
We arrived at the hotel which looked splendid in the summer sunshine and immediately went indoors for the next couple of hours of entertainment in the way of a fashion show with a difference. The mannequins themselves paraded around the circular dining tables each with 9 ladies from different WI’s in Glamorgan. They gave us information about the price, texture of the garments and were very informative. All the while we were eating our lunch which we had pre ordered and everyone said their meal was delicious. A nice glass of something light was enjoyed then coffee or tea to follow. To finish we sat in the sunshine in the super garden and some went exploring until it was time to go home.
Tea/Coffee and cakes afternoon.
The hall was packed with ladies from various WI’s who all looked very summery. It was a light hearted affair with stalls selling bric a brac, scarves and bags, crafts, tombola and of course the book stall. Things soon got into a swing and the ladies sat chatting and enjoying the cakes and savouries which were limitless. Tea and coffee was provided and every table was full. We had a visit from the Fire and Rescue Service who gave us a talk and important information regarding home safety. You can call Free on 0800 169 1234. Or www.wales.gov.uk/fire for more information. The three fire officers who came to us, visited every table and spoke to each person and invited them to phone in to check their hazards and possible risks, so that a visit could be arranged for the fire service to come out and inspect your home personally.
Afterwards ‘name the cuddly toy’ from the craft stall was won and the new owner called him Griff. A good amount of prizes were won in the generous raffle all donated by our members. Bags of goodies such as apple crumble and custard and lemon cake to take away, proved a very successful addition to the usual cakes, our thanks to Ann for the goodie bags.
Our next monthly meeting will be Tuesday June 4th at 7pm
The next social meeting will be the third Tuesday afternoon of the month 18th June 2019 at 2.00 pm
Thursday knit and natter afternoons go on as always at the hall at 2 pm.
Come along and enjoy the fun and camaraderie. DB.
