July 2019
July started on a high note at Barry WI, with 70 WI ladies and visitors at the monthly meeting, to enjoy listening to the Tenovus Choir. The choir sang a variety of numbers, old and new and even some sing along as well. At one point there was a surprise event when some very “old” ladies, complete with walking sticks, joined us and suddenly burst into a very energetic and entertaining tap routine. Part of the way through the performance there was a technical glitch and the backing track failed but within a matter of moments the choir were back on their feet and singing the backing track for the “ old ladies” to complete their routine! What troupers and what a fantastic evening, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and after a welcome cuppa went home with a smile. Thank you Tenovus.
At the knit and natter afternoons work commenced on our wall display to celebrate our 30 year anniversary and so we have themed the display with Pearls. Our WI held its first official meeting in October 1989 and we still have three of the founder members in the group.
At our social afternoon meet, Liz gave us a talk on making a recording at the famous Rockfield Studios, Monmouthshire, where Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody and was also featured in the recent film of the same name. Liz explained the whole process from writing the lyrics and the music right through to the CD production and whilst at times it was tiring it was also very special. Thank you Liz.
Wednesday, 17th July, along with friends from several other WI’s we enjoyed a visit to Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes followed by time spent in Monmouth. The weather was very kind to us and we all enjoyed wandering the Gardens and lunching in Monmouth, we even managed a little retail therapy, a good day all round.
A group of ladies went to the production of Oliver at Whitmore High School on the 18th July and thoroughly enjoyed the evening . Though the gunshot towards the end of the show made quite an impact, despite us being aware of it happening!
The WI Glamorgan show at North Cornelly displayed was themed The Goggle Box and the entries were, as always, amazing in their craftsmanship and covered all genres.
A walk in Cosmeston Park was next on the agenda, when eleven ladies, one gentleman and two dogs enjoyed a stroll around the lakes followed by a cooling ice cream at the end.
A visit to Barry Memorial Hall arranged by Sue, to see the show 9 to 5, produced by Billboard, gave us a chance to enjoy an excellent am dram performance and coincidentally meet up with friends from Dinas Powys WI who were also there.
We finished off the month with a fantastic cheese and wine lunch, hosted by Pam and husband Lew at their home. Some forty ladies enjoyed lunch, wine and amazing gardens with views of the channel. Plenty of chatter and laughter and a lovely end to another busy month. Thank you to Pam and Lew for their hospitality.
