News from Highlight Park WI for February 2020

65 ladies attended to hear a talk delivered by Nat West Community banker Sian Chudleigh

Our talk today was titled Friends Against Scams.   Basically, proud partners of Friends Against Scams campaign, a National Trading Standards initiative which aims to protect and prevent people becoming victims of scams.

People tend not to talk about it if they have been scammed with 16-25 year olds being the largest number. Fraud is the largest crime in the country £5 – 10 billion loss last year.

Postal/telephone/doorstep/online scams were discussed.  Telephone scams are the biggest problems at the moment.  We were given 5 top tips as follows:

Don’t disclose personal info.

Don’t assume everyone is genuine

Listen to your instincts

Don’t be rushed into things

Stay in control.

Leaflets were handed out to remind us of the risks.  This was a very useful informative afternoon which gave us food for thought.

We went all the way to Cardiff for a Visit to City Hall on Feb 7th   and so on a bright day in February the Highlight Park ladies alighted a super bus to take them to the City of Cardiff. Our aim was to have a guided tour around City Hall but before that, we were treated to a fantastic afternoon tea. With waiters hovering to serve our tea and coffee with tea strainers as well, we helped ourselves to the mouthwatering  aray of tiny cakes, scones, lemon cakes, fruit tarts in chocolate  lined cases as well as tiny finger sandwiches of various fillings.  All with a whiter than white table cloth with a single candle in the middle. The statues in The Marble Hall and the Assembly Room were stunning. The statues were made from Serraveza Marble. They depict the Heroes of Wales and were a gift to the City from Lord Rhondda of Llanwern and cost £15,000.  Of particular beauty were mouldings of mermaids, seashells over the entrances to the Council Chamber and the Assembly Room.  Well worth a visit.

Later in the month we held an activity afternoon when we all had a game of curling.  It was very enjoyable and is thoroughly recommended.

Coming up we have various talks planned and trips to go on and fund raising for local charities.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the moment at 2 pm social afternoons on the third Tuesday of each month.  Sewing Circle meets every Thursday at 2 pm.
